You told AI something yesterday, but today it seems to forget. That does not necessarily mean the conversation was deleted. Separate what it uses for the current answer from what it may use in another conversation.

Three things to keep separate

  • Context: “information available for the answer right now”. Think of papers on the desk.
  • Memory: “some information that may help future conversations”. Think of a preference note.
  • History: “the list of conversations saved in your account”. Opening an old chat does not guarantee every detail is used in a new answer.

A simple example

You write: “I prefer explanations with examples”. Later you request a shopping list. That preference may shape the answer, but the assistant still needs the number of people eating and the ingredients you already have.

Remembering how you like to learn is different from knowing everything about today’s task. Information may come from different sources depending on the tool and account.

What to do when information is missing

  • Restate the goal: “I need a list for three people”.
  • Provide essential facts: ingredients, deadline or correct document.
  • Ask AI to identify missing information instead of guessing.
  • Review available memory controls in account settings.
  • To remove information, check memory and the sources containing it. Deleting a chat alone may not be enough.

Explore what changes in each situation

Choose a situation. This is an interactive explanation; it does not change your account data or settings.

I state how many people are eating

You added an important fact to the current conversation. AI now has information needed for the list. Check that the answer used that number.

What to do in your tool

ChatGPT

Organize the conversation and check what stays saved.

  • Open Settings → Personalization → Memory and review your available controls.
  • Check remembered information and correct anything wrong.
  • Provide the necessary facts again for important answers.
See a simple request

“Use this file to list deadlines. Show the supporting passage for each item.”

Gemini

Choose which information to send and which services to connect.

  • Check account options for personalization or saved information where available.
  • Review activity, a record of Gemini use, rather than assuming perfect recall.
  • Restate essential facts for the current task.
See a simple request

“Summarize this document in five points. Tell me if the file does not contain an answer.”

Claude Chat

Collect your materials and check who can use them.

  • Check memory or personalization options available in your account.
  • Use project instructions to explain how to work with that topic.
  • Memory is not a complete file copy: provide the necessary material.
See a simple request

“Read these materials and make a task list. Name the document supporting each task.”
